Scarborough Boxing Club Expansion: £700,000 Funding Secures Future for Community Sport (2026)

Westway Boxing Club in Scarborough is set to undergo a transformative expansion, thanks to a substantial £700,000 funding injection. This investment marks a significant milestone for the club, enabling the construction of a main training hall, a full-sized boxing ring, and additional gym space. The club's journey towards this expansion began with an initial grant of £350,000 from Broadland Properties, and the North Yorkshire Council has now stepped in to provide the remaining funds, a decision that has been hailed as a major boost for grassroots sport.

Ryan Ashworth, a dedicated boxing coach and long-time member of the club, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, 'This investment is a fantastic opportunity to strengthen grassroots sport and secure the club's future for the next 100 years.' He further emphasized the club's commitment to supporting young people and vulnerable adults, providing them with a safe and positive environment to develop confidence, discipline, and life skills. With members spanning a wide age range from nine to 86, Westway Boxing Club is a true community hub, and the expansion will only enhance its ability to serve the local population.

The council's executive member for corporate services, Councillor Heather Phillips, shared her sentiments, highlighting the club's enduring impact on the community. She stated, 'Westway Boxing Club is a much-loved facility that has supported generations, offering a safe, positive, and inspiring space for young people and adults alike.' The additional funding will enable the club to modernize, expand its facilities, and continue delivering life-changing opportunities, while also improving the overall health and well-being of its users.

The expansion plans include the addition of new changing rooms, toilets, a cafe area, classrooms, and storage spaces. Broadland Properties, a Scarborough-based company, has also funded the design and planning work for the project, with Richard Guthrie expressing his delight in the company's contribution, stating, 'This is fantastic news for Eastfield and for everyone who uses Westway Boxing Club. The funding will help the club grow, modernize, and continue delivering real benefits for local people.'

This significant development comes as part of a broader regeneration effort in Eastfield, with local residents invited to participate in shaping the use of £3.2 million in regeneration funding. The expansion of Westway Boxing Club not only promises to enhance the club's facilities but also underscores the potential for positive change within the community, as the club continues to play a vital role in the lives of its members and the surrounding area.
