Rory McIlroy's Frustrating Pursuit: Can He Overcome Self-Inflicted Wounds?
In a captivating narrative at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Rory McIlroy, the defending champion, finds himself in a familiar yet frustrating position. Despite solid opening rounds, McIlroy laments the 'wasteful' mistakes that have kept him from truly challenging for the lead.
But here's where it gets controversial: McIlroy believes he should be right in the thick of it. With rounds of 68 and 67, he's just six shots behind the leader, Akshay Bhatia, in a tournament known for its low scores. Yet, McIlroy's own assessment is that he's been a bit too generous with his mistakes.
"I got off to a great start, but then I stalled. I feel like I've left some easy shots out there," McIlroy said. And he's right; his miscues, especially the avoidable three-putts on Thursday, have been costly.
And this is the part most people miss: McIlroy's putting, usually a strength, has been middling at best. He's lost over two strokes on the greens, an unusual occurrence for a player of his caliber. "My game feels good, actually better than in Dubai a few weeks ago. I'm just trying to build on that," McIlroy added.
The first two days have been a reminder that even the stars need time to find their rhythm after a break. McIlroy is not alone in this; a star-studded pack, including Keegan Bradley, Hideki Matsuyama, and Jordan Spieth, are all within striking distance, but none have truly shone yet.
