A chilling scene has unfolded in Pierce Township, Ohio, where over seventy vultures have been found dead on the grounds of St. Bernadette Elementary School. The community is understandably shaken, and the cause of this mass mortality remains a mystery.
On December 15th, the Pierce Township Fire Department discovered the grim sight: dozens of deceased vultures scattered across the school's baseball fields. The birds had been there for days, causing concern among residents. Fire officials have reached out to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) for assistance in removing the carcasses, but as of the reporting time, the birds remained on the property.
Local resident Dennis Bauer, whose son attends St. Bernadette, expressed his shock at the photos shared by the fire department. He noted that the area has a history with vultures, with many previously seen perched on an abandoned nursing home nearby. Parents are understandably worried, with speculation ranging from poisoning to the possibility of bird flu. The fire chief believes bird flu may be to blame, though official confirmation is still pending.
But here's where it gets controversial... The ODNR has stated that they have conducted testing on other dead wild birds in the county and have been advised those birds are "presumed positive" for HPAI (Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza). Given this, and the large number of deceased vultures, the situation is being treated as a potential HPAI outbreak. However, the ODNR is collecting more samples for further testing due to the unusual circumstances.
While the school has not closed classes, officials are working on an official statement for parents. The incident has, however, sparked conversations among students, with one child comically referring to the birds as "virtues."
And this is the part most people miss... The situation raises several questions. Could it be a localized outbreak of avian flu? Or is there something else at play?
