Bold opening: Arsenal still lead, but Manchester City and Aston Villa are closing in fast—and the week’s results prove the title race isn’t over yet.
LONDON, December 14 — Manchester City and Aston Villa both secured away victories on Sunday, keeping them within striking distance of Premier League table-toppers Arsenal.
Following Arsenal’s home win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, City and Villa responded with crucial triumphs of their own.
Manchester City relied on Erling Haaland, who scored twice as City edged Crystal Palace 3-0 away from home. Palace, who started the weekend in fourth place and created early chances, were unable to convert, with Haaland breaking the deadlock in the 41st minute. Phil Foden added a second in the 69th, and Haaland converted a late penalty, sealing the win that came on the back of City’s midweek victory over Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League.
Aston Villa recovered from a deficit to beat West Ham away. West Ham opened the scoring in the first minute through Mateus Fernandes, but an own goal levelled the match by the ninth minute. Jarrod Bowen’s goal restored West Ham’s lead in the 24th minute, yet Villa responded with two goals from Morgan Rogers, turning the game around and securing Villa’s sixth straight league win.
In another notable result, an own goal by Newcastle United striker Nick Woltemade at the start of the second half helped Sunderland claim their first Wear-Tyne derby league win in nine years.
Nottingham Forest earned a vital 3-0 home victory over Tottenham Hotspur, climbing to 16th in the table. Callum Hudson-Odoi bagged a brace, with Ibrahim Sangare delivering both assists before adding Forest’s third goal.
Brentford and Leeds United shared the spoils, as Jordan Henderson put Brentford ahead in the 70th minute and Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalized for Leeds in the 82nd.
In short: City and Villa capitalize on Arsenal’s lead, keeping the pressure on at the top while several other results shake up the midtable dynamics.
