Transforming Leyburn's Crime-Hit Public Toilets into a Visitor and Heritage Hub
Leyburn's former public toilet block is set to undergo a remarkable transformation, thanks to a substantial funding grant of over £115,000. The Kelberdale toilets, located off Market Place, have been closed due to persistent anti-social behavior and escalating operational costs, with other facilities available in the area. However, the town council has a vision to revitalize this space.
The funding will be utilized to redevelop the block, incorporating essential amenities such as a disabled toilet. Additionally, the grant will support the creation of a new Visit Leyburn website, designed to promote the town to visitors and showcase local community services. This initiative aims to enhance Leyburn's appeal as a tourist destination.
The grant, totaling £117,523, has been generously allocated to Leyburn Town Council by the Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, David Skaith, through the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority's Sustainable High Streets Fund. Skaith emphasized the evolving nature of high streets, stating that they have always been and will continue to be vital hubs for our communities.
He expressed his enthusiasm for the new facility, envisioning it as a catalyst for an 'inclusive, prosperous market town high street for all.' The Accessible Leyburn project, which accompanies the hub's development, includes plans for plastic matting to improve the path from the Shawl to the nearby playground and additional accessible seating on the Shawl. Thirty more accessibility audits of businesses and attractions in and around the town will be conducted, ensuring a comprehensive approach to accessibility.
Furthermore, the Access the Dales charity has donated a wheelchair scooter to the hub, demonstrating a commitment to enhancing accessibility. The town council has announced that more details about the plans will be released, inviting residents and businesses to actively participate in the project by contributing content for the hub and website. This inclusive approach aims to engage the community in shaping the town's future.
