Heavy snowfall has hit Prince Edward Island, leading to significant disruptions across the province on Tuesday. The impact of this winter weather has resulted in numerous delays and closures, prompting officials to issue snow warnings for Kings and Queens counties, along with a special weather alert for Prince county.
In light of the adverse conditions, all schools, both English and French, have been closed for the day. This closure extends to institutions such as the Island Montessori Academy located in Stratford and Cornwall, which will also remain shuttered.
Higher education facilities are not spared either; all locations of Holland College and the University of Prince Edward Island’s campuses in Charlottetown and St. Peter's Bay will be closed today. However, it's important to note that the AVC Veterinary Teaching Hospital will continue to operate, but only for emergency situations.
For those relying on healthcare services, Health P.E.I. has provided up-to-date information about delays and closures through their website. Islanders are encouraged to check in with their hospitals, clinics, or other health care facilities before heading out, especially if they are unable to attend their scheduled appointments.
Furthermore, all provincial civil service offices will experience a delayed opening until 12:30 p.m., with more updates expected by 11:30 a.m. Similarly, Charlottetown City Hall and its administrative offices will also open late, at 10:30 a.m., with further details to be announced at 9:30 a.m. Additionally, branches of the Provincial Credit Union will delay their opening until 12:30 p.m. as well.
Environment Canada has issued yellow snowfall warnings for Kings and Queens counties and a special weather statement for Prince county, indicating that the snow is expected to persist through the morning hours, tapering off later in the afternoon. According to CBC meteorologist Tina Simpkin, wind gusts are contributing to the ongoing flurries, suggesting that there could be an additional five to ten centimeters of snow on the way, although conditions may vary across Prince County.
As the day progresses, Simpkin mentioned that the winds are forecasted to gradually decrease as evening approaches.
Stay tuned for further updates on the situation.
