Thousands of people flocked to the three brand new stations, officially named Federal Way Downtown, Star Lake, and Kent Des Moines, to celebrate Sound Transit's latest expansion. This long-awaited project, which began in 2008, has finally brought light rail service to the area, connecting residents to opportunities across the region.
The 1 Line, now the second-longest light rail line in the U.S. at 41 miles, stretches all the way to Federal Way, a remarkable achievement. The 7.8-mile extension is a testament to the hard work and dedication of Sound Transit, which had to navigate through the challenges of the Great Recession and secure additional funding. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was a moment of triumph, especially for those who had doubted the area's transportation investments, like King County Councilmember Pete von Reichbauer, who famously said, 'hell freezes over' before light rail would arrive.

Sound Transit projects that the Federal Way Extension will carry 18,000 to 23,000 daily passengers by 2028, adding to the booming light rail ridership. The 1 Line has been averaging more than 110,000 daily riders since June 2025. The new stations will make it easier for students to commute to UW and provide new job opportunities for workers in Kent. It will also offer families a reliable and affordable way to access the airport, healthcare, school, and other opportunities.
The project's success is a result of the advocacy from the cities of Federal Way, Des Moines, and Kent, as well as the federal delegation's efforts to secure funding. However, the extension's impact goes beyond economic stimulus. It is a symbol of progress and connectivity for South King County, an area that has often been overlooked in transportation investments. As Sound Transit CEO Dow Constantine noted, 'we will take it for granted' and 'build our daily lives around it.'
Looking ahead, Sound Transit's next expansion is tentatively planned for spring 2026 with the 2 Line light rail extension across Lake Washington. The project will need to overcome testing hurdles before an opening date is set. Once extended, the 2 Line will run from Redmond to Lynnwood, doubling service frequencies in Downtown Seattle and points north. Federal Way is expected to remain the southern terminus of the 1 Line for a decade, with Tacoma becoming the new southern terminus in 2035.
