Dodgers' Bullpen Woes: Top Closer Options After Raisel Iglesias Snub | MLB Free Agency (2026)

The Los Angeles Dodgers' quest for a third consecutive World Series title just hit a snag. Despite boasting a powerhouse offense and a stellar starting rotation, a glaring weakness in their bullpen could jeopardize their championship aspirations. But here's where it gets controversial: their pursuit of a top-tier closer has hit a roadblock.

The Dodgers are loaded with offensive firepower, with stars like Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, and Mookie Betts leading the charge. Their starting pitching is equally impressive, featuring talents such as Tyler Glasnow, Blake Snell, and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, along with the promising Roki Sasaki, who is expected to develop into a reliable starter by 2026.

However, the bullpen was a significant issue last season. Manager Dave Roberts often opted to use starting pitchers in relief during the postseason, highlighting a lack of trust in the bullpen's performance. The regular season saw the Dodgers' bullpen post a 4.27 ERA, ranking second-lowest among the 12 playoff teams. Their 1.33 WHIP ranked a disappointing 20th in Major League Baseball.

With these struggles in mind, the Dodgers were expected to aggressively pursue a reliable closer in the offseason. Their disappointment in Tanner Scott, whom they signed to a four-year, $72 million deal last offseason, further fueled this need.

The Dodgers reportedly targeted free agent Raisel Iglesias, who has been the Atlanta Braves' closer for the past four seasons. Iglesias had a rough start to the season but improved significantly, ending with a 1.25 ERA in his final 45 appearances.

According to reports, the Dodgers offered Iglesias a deal worth around $16 million, but the 35-year-old ultimately chose to re-sign with the Braves on a similar contract. This decision came despite offers from both the Dodgers and the Blue Jays.

"We know he fits in the clubhouse," said Braves president of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos, emphasizing the importance of team chemistry and familiarity. The Braves had considered trading Iglesias earlier in the season, but ultimately decided to keep him.

The Dodgers' bullpen woes are a serious concern. While they have a strong offense and starting pitching, the lack of a reliable closer could be their downfall. They will need to find a solution quickly to compete for a World Series title.

There are still other intriguing closers available in the free-agent market, including Edwin Diaz.
