The 2026 National Indigenous Music Awards (NIMAs) celebrated the diverse and vibrant music scene of Australia's Indigenous communities, with Baker Boy emerging as a dominant force. His album, DJANDJAY, and the single 'THICK SKIN' featuring an impressive lineup of artists, took home three major awards, including Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Film Clip of the Year. This achievement marks a significant milestone for Baker Boy, who is widely recognized as the first Indigenous artist to achieve mainstream success rapping in the Yolŋu Matha language.
Born Danzal Baker in Darwin and raised in the Arnhem Land communities of Milingimbi and Maningrida, Baker Boy's journey to stardom began in 2017 when he won triple j's Unearthed National Indigenous Music Awards competition. His singles 'Cloud 9' and 'Marryuna' made their mark in the same year's triple j Hottest 100. This success paved the way for further recognition, including being named Young Australian of the Year in 2019 and awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2021. His debut album, Gela (2021), further solidified his place in the music industry, earning him five wins from seven nominations at the 2022 ARIA Awards.
The NIMAs ceremony, held at the Darwin Amphitheater, was a celebration of the rich connection between family and culture. It showcased the incredible talent and diversity of Indigenous music, with other notable winners including Birdz and Fred Leone, who took home the Artist of the Year award for their debut EP GIRA, and Drifting Clouds, who won Best New Talent. The Northern Peninsula Area's 'All The Way From The NPA' was named Community Clip of the Year, and Bulman School & Community received the Indigenous Language Award for 'LOK LOK MAH BURARR' (Lizard & Goanna).
The ceremony also honored established artists, with blues musician Marlene Cummins and Elcho Island's Saltwater Band inducted into the NIMAs Hall of Fame. The night concluded with a tribute to Saltwater Band, paying homage to their significant contributions to Indigenous music.
